Launch of the Study: Strategy for Chile’s Trade Policy in the Asia-Pacific 2026-2030

Date: 06/01/2026

At an event held this morning at the Institute of International Studies (IEI) at the University of Chile, we presented the main findings and recommendations of the publication Chile's Trade Policy toward the Pacific Rim, a study conducted by the IEI on behalf of and in collaboration with the Chile Pacific Foundation.

This work analyzes the opportunities and challenges for deepening and expanding Chile's economic relations in the Asian Pacific basin, in a context of profound geopolitical and geoeconomic changes. It also proposes medium- and long-term strategies that include initiatives for the consolidation of a space called “Latino Pacífico” and for the growth of services.

Loreto Leyton, executive director of the Foundation, gave a welcome speech and provided context for the work, while Dorotea López, director of the IEI, presented the report's findings and conclusions.

“This publication analyzes the opportunities and challenges of Chilean trade policy with the dynamics and transitions that impact trade, while establishing recommendations for shaping a strategy that we hope will be useful for authorities and representatives of the private sector, who are called upon to visualize and take advantage of these new paths that are emerging,” said Loreto Leyton.

Dorotea López, in turn, highlighted that "in 2024, 56% of Chilean exports went to that region, which is the center of gravity for international trade, productive investment, and the reorganization of global value chains, leading three strategic vectors of the 21st century: energy transition and critical minerals; food, food security, and added value; and digitization and knowledge-intensive services."

The panel of commentators, moderated by Andrés Bórquez, coordinator of the IEI's Master's in Asian Studies, included Natalia Cortés, former head of ProChile's Asia and Oceania Division; Paulina Nazal, former Director General of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and consultant at ProAmérica; and Rodrigo Yáñez, Secretary General of SOFOFA and former Undersecretary of International Economic Relations.

Paulina Nazal pointed out the importance of prioritization in order to identify the sectors where Chile can compete, while Rodrigo Yáñez called for greater coordination with the private sector in trade agreements and accords. Natalia Cortés highlighted the strength of Chilean trade policy, although she warned that “the world is changing rapidly and one of the main challenges posed by the study is how we adapt to this new reality.”
