In this new webinar, we examined the current state and prospects of the U.S.-China relationship in light of the outcomes of the May summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump — the first in a series of high-level meetings announced for this year.
The discussion explored the real scope of the agreements reached in Beijing — described by both governments as "constructive strategic stability" — and the structural tensions that remain latent beneath that apparent calm. Panelists also addressed the implications of this dynamic for the international order, the situation in Taiwan, and the concrete challenges facing mid-sized economies, particularly in Latin America — a region increasingly pressured to take sides in strategic sectors such as critical minerals and telecommunications, as it seeks to build its own autonomy in the face of rivalry between the world's two major powers.
Panelists included Amanda Hsiao, Director of the China Division at Eurasia Group; Scott Kennedy, Senior Adviser and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); and Raymond Kuo, Vice President for Geostrategic Research and Diplomacy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
