Due to its geographic position, Chile has a natural projection towards the Pacific Ocean, not only political but also cultural, economic and commercial.
The Asia-Pacific Region offers important challenges and opportunities. Taking advantage of the immense means of connection across the Pacific Ocean, Chile has aspired to become a bridging country for the purpose of developing links in the political, trade and cultural areas from Asian countries to Latin America and vice-versa.
Chile’s relations with Asian countries have been permanent, intensifying as from 1990, the year in which Chile joined the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), and shortly after, in 1994, when Chile joined the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
Early on, Chile realized that in order to sustain and develop further its ties with the countries in the Asian Basin, it required ample and coordinated action by both public and private sector players. In fact, the structure and mode of the more important Asia Pacific forums, such as those mentioned above, required the presence of governments, businessmen, academics and members of civil society organizations.
During the government of President Eduardo Frei (father) and Carlos Figueroa the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ex-Minister Secretary General to the Presidency, Edgardo Boeninger, was commissioned to create some sort of mixed institution capable of bringing together the public and the private sectors in order to strengthen ties with Asia Pacific.
After exploring different options, it was decided that the best way to achieve the purpose defined was to create a Foundation. This institution would allow for the channeling of the participation and contributions, both from government sectors and from companies and private sector businessmen.
This gave birth to the Fundación Chilena del Pacífico (Chile Pacific Foundation).
The objective of the Foundation is to develop activities in both national and international fields.
In the international field its principal objective is to support Chile’s economic, cultural and social insertion into the Pacific Basin by promoting and developing Chile’s commercial, economic, cultural, scientific, technological and social interchange with the countries that comprise it as well as other countries outside the Basin that may boost the securing of its objective.
Within the national plan, it promotes the interest in and the knowledge of the countries and the economic, social and cultural systems of the Pacific Basin by analyzing the markets, the bilateral relations and cultural projects.
It develops these activities with a close collaboration with Government entities and the private sector as well as universities and higher education centers.
The Foundation may provide advice to these economic and social plans developed with the countries in the Asia Pacific Region.
It will submit proposals in areas of promotion of the economic and social activities that might be considered and subsequently carried out. These include searching for innovation and technological responses to the needs of the country.
It will identify working areas of interest to the groups represented through the Foundation and that support Chile’s role in the Region.
The Foundation was established under public deed on 2 November, 1994 before the Santiago Notary Public, Juan Ricardo San Martín and by Decree of the Ministry of Justice N° 1,606, published in the Official Gazette N° 13,468 dated 19 December 1994 it was granted its legal status and its statutes were approved.
The first meeting of the Board of Directors took place on 19 December, 1994. The corresponding minutes were converted to a public deed dated 28 December, 1994 before Santiago Notary Public, Alvaro Bianchi.

It acts as a National Secretariat in some regional meetings in which Chile participates and at the same time as a complementary operating unit, as a consequence of the delegation and specific mandates from the Government of Chile, backing a long-term institutional activity.
